In an effort to spur us on through the home stretch, Don Stelluto, pictured below, has volunteered to wear PINK NAIL POLISH if I get up over $2500! In a funny gender-ized incident, I dropped off a whole load of pink shirts at the cleaners. When I left, I glanced at the claim check and it seems two of them could not be recognized as "shirts" and instead had to categorized as "blouses." Just thought I'd share... (Incidentally, the blouses in question were from Day 11 and Day 5).

ND associate dean dons pink to fight breast cancer

SOUTH BEND -- Daniel J. Myers peers into his closet each morning and mulls his choices.

Hmmm, what should it be today?

Pink shirt, pink tie, pink sport coat?

To raise money to fight breast cancer, Myers is wearing pink to work every day during October -- Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

It's part of a large effort in the University of Notre Dame's College of Arts & Letters to raise funds for the cause."I have 12 to 14 pink shirts of one sort or another," said Myers, 42, of Granger, a sociology professor and associate dean. Friends and supporters are giving him additional pink apparel.

Myers provides updates and posts a daily photo of himself in his latest pink attire on a blog: indeliblepink.blogspot.com.

He's raised more than $1,870 so far. All the money is donated to United Health Services to pay for mammograms and related treatment for women in need in St. Joseph County.

Myers' undertaking is part of a wide-ranging effort to raise money for breast cancer prevention and treatment. Arts & Letters employees are outdoing themselves in coming up with creative ways to attract pledges.

Dean John McGreevy is auctioning off the opportunity to be "dean for a day."Associate Dean Stuart Greene is riding his bike 20 miles a day every day this month, asking sponsors to donate 25 cents per mile or $5 per day.

Employees in the music department are leading a weekly $3 walk around the campus

lakes and contributing the proceeds.

For a $50 donation, a graduate student has agreed to dress as a nun. For $100, another will quit smoking for a day. For $200, another will dye his hair pink.

The dean's office is selling Notre Dame note cards with artwork by Barbara Roche, a cancer survivor and wife of the former dean, for $10 for a pack of eight."This thing has snowballed," Myers said last week, dressed in a pink and white candy-stripe shirt and a pink hat. People are e-mailing him pledges and dropping off spare cash donations.

Myers came up with the idea to wear pink because he likes to make fun competitions out of things. "It's made everything so much more lively," he said. Visitors regularly stop by his office to check out his outfit in person.

To contribute, checks should be made out to United Health Services and mailed to Myers at: Dean's Office, College of Arts & Letters, 100 O'Shaughnessy Hall, Notre Dame, IN 46556.

Because he's gathered more than his $1,000 original goal in pledges, Myers on the last day of the month will fulfill a promise: He'll wear an outfit completely composed of pink items (pants, shirt, tie, belt, socks, shoes and a cape) and ride a pink bicycle around campus to personally thank everyone who sponsored him. He'll carry a pail that day to collect additional donations.

The breast-cancer fundraiser started eight years ago as a team-building activity for the college, said Mo Marnocha, office supervisor in the dean's office. It's grown every year since.Over the years, the college has raised more than $37,000 for the cause.

Day 9: The Bike's up for Grabs, Too!

Although it pales next to the color of this bike, my shirt is actually pink. The bike is the latest addition to our campaign, donated by Rob and Lori Becht. You can buy a raffle ticket to win this beauty* from Mo Marnocha (Marnocha.2@nd.edu) for a mere 2 bucks. As a bonus, if you work at ND, I will deliver the bike to your office on Oct. 31st, as the last stop on my tour of campus dressed all in pink!

I actually rode this bike down the main hall of O'Shaughnessy Hall and into the Deans and Chairs Meeting this morning!

Computing Goes Pink!

In a moment of inspired insanity, Dave Mastic, head of the College's computer geek squad (and I use these terms with appropriate reverence, considering myself an aspiring junior computer geek as well), has agreed to bring PINK into his hair style! That's right, this Wednesday, Dave is going to dye a permanent pink ribbon into his hair! This guy might have more of the spirit than I do.

If you'd like to see Dave in his glory, please stop by the ALCO office (234 Decio) on Thursday or Friday and make a donation to gain entry to this month's premier sideshow: THE MAN WITH PINK HAIR!!! Step right up folks!

Fighting Cancer the Pink Way

The Dean's Office of the College of Arts and Letters at the University of Notre Dame is joining many others fighting against cancer with a month-long fundraising drive in October. Dean John McGreevy, for example, will be auctioning off the opportunity to be DEAN FOR A DAY, and there will be a host of other activities geared for both fun and fun-draising. I'll add links later as more information becomes available.

As for me personally, this blog will chronicle my attempt to wear (and get away with wearing) pink to work every day during the month of October. I will post a picture of my outfit every day on this blog for you to verify this feat of daring-do.

I'm looking for sponsors who will pay to see me wear pink. If you'd like to join the fun, just drop me an email at dmyers@nd.edu and let me know how much per day of pink you are willing to pledge. Because of my schedule for the month, I'll actually be at work 18 days during October. Assuming I can do it every day, you can use this handy little pledge guide to estimate* your contribution:

$1.00 per day = $18
$2.00 per day = $36
$3.47 per day = $63.46
$5.00 per day = $90
$7.67 per day = $138.06
$100 per day = $1800
$117.17 per day = $2109.06

Incentive: If I can gather up more than $1000 in pledges, I will wear an outfit on the last day of the month completely composed of pink items: Pants, Shirt, Tie, Belt, Socks, and even Shoes!

Well, it didn't take long for people start dreaming up additions to my scheme. I've already agreed to add pink underwear for a premium. And Pink sunglasses for $25 extra! Others have suggested I wear pink nail polish--but I haven't heard a dollar figure on that yet. And I've gotten a $100 commitment for a mystery item...should I agree to it or not??

It's Almost Here!

Only about 36 hours until I start my pink run! Pictures of my pink-laced (get it?) outfits will be posted here starting Weds. October 1st! Don't forget to tune in for your daily shot!
